A Chief Officer loses his finger while sailing off the coast of Queensland. Losing blood, he needs a hospital. Quick thinking and clear communication are necessary. Plans need to be made and followed, abiding by maritime law and having a high level of experience in both vessels and the environment. This is only the lead up to the rescue. Planning the helicopter and it’s landing at sea, ensuring the safety of the crew and injured, and flying back to the mainland hospital are only the second half of the story. A steady head, a clear mind, the knowledge of protocol and the ability to communicate a plan into action are all aspects of this one incident that demonstrate my professional skills as a shipping agent. Add to this my law degree, and I am able to span the divide between the world in the office and the world to which maritime law applies. A deep love for the ocean and my family connections to law have fused, allowing me to create my own niche pathway in the two industries. Upon completing my degree at QUT, I aim to combine the experiences I’ve gained in real-world situations with those of the textbook, and become an expert in maritime law. With experience earned by working in logistics management, I am able to lend credibility to my messages. As a strategic thinker, I analyse problems on the go. This trait that served me well during my time working in maritime logistics management, operating as the conduit between the government, vessel, crew and cargo. I’ve built a body of connections from my time in logistics management, and from developing an importing company delivering to retailers, and look forward to making more in the future.
