I am Phillip Kling, a graduate student in the University of Arkansas’s Master of Design Studies (MDes) Program and am enrolled in the Integrated Wood Design concentration. Previously, I earned a bachelor degree of Architecture at the Fay Jones school in May 2020. During those studies, I was able to complete many design studio projects and developed a passion for working with wood. The graduate program I am currently in, is one-year in length and features courses in sustainability, wood design, research methods, and leadership along with two graduate level design studios. During my graduate studies, I developed important knowledge that has both broadened my view as an architectural designer and cultivated an in-depth understanding of the industry around wood. Advanced studios developed my understanding of working with wood aesthetically, sustainably, and structurally. In addition to these advanced studio explorations, design-focused seminar courses in leadership, research, and sustainability have developed my skills in their respective areas.In addition to my academic preparation, I have had several opportunities outside of the classroom. In December 2021 I worked with Marlon Blackwell Architects to construct a physical model and create graphics for a client meeting. Also, I have worked Benchmark Group in Rogers, AR since August 2020. At Benchmark, I have worked on a team to create construction documents fulfilling client prototype implementations as well as documenting existing buildings and modeling them in BIM software. This role in particular has honed my skills in contributing to a holistic BIM model with several disciplines. At these two places, I have learned how to work as part of a team in an architecture office and how to coordinate large projects. Prior to that, I worked in the Fay Jones school’s fabrication lab for 5 years where I learned hands on woodworking and other forms of making, including 3D printing and CNC Milling.
