Rocicorp is a devtools partnership that makes Reflect (https://reflect.net/). Reflect enables developers to easily create realtime multiplayer apps. It is "multiplayer as a service", the technical infrastructure you'd need to build a Figma or Miro. We also make Replicache (https://replicache.dev), a client-side library facilitating the same.

Filecoin is a blockchain-based, massive (exabytes) decentralized data storage and retrieval system. I led development of the first Filecoin node implementation. Filecoin launched in October 2020.

At Attic Labs we built a decentralized database called Noms. We were acquired by Salesforce in January 2018 and I chose not to make the transition.Like most databases, Noms features a rich data model, atomic transactions, and efficient searches, scans, reads, and updates. Unlike other databases, Noms has built-in multiparty sync and conflict resolution. This feature makes Noms a good fit for P2P and decentralized applications. Any number of peers can concurrently modify the same logical Noms database and continuously and efficiently sync their changes with each other. https://github.com/attic-labs/noms

I worked in Search Infrastructure on a variety of problems across the serving stack. I was both tech lead and manager for dozens of engineers across several offices. Some specific contributions include:- replaced the system that updates the configuration, behavior, and data of Google's Search fleet (tens of thousands of instances across tens of regions world-wide) with one that was faster, safer, and easier to use- built and launched the service that serves dynamically targeted UI widgets such as the Googlebar and in-house ads/promotions to end users on all Google properties (on the order of a million qps)- fixed problems of scale or reliability in multiple mission-critical infrastructure components- set strategy for mobile infrastructure The systems I built required carefully balancing the needs of a variety of internal customers and stakeholders, for example balancing the speed of Search innovation with site safety. Non-manager translation: I had to wrangle consensus from a large number of often change-resistant, ornery teams who had conflicting requirements.Probably my proudest accomplishment is building and managing several healthy teams, mentoring junior engineers, growing leaders, and keeping focus on what was most important to the business. Non-manager translation: people liked working for me and the people I worked for valued my work.

Aardvark found people to answer any question in realtime. You asked a question in natural language and aardvark found perfect answerers from your extended network based on interests, location, network, and more. Aardvark worked over IM, the web, email, and mobile and got most questions answered within 5 minutes. I was the first software engineer hired and made foundational contributions to just about everything: features, architecture, search infrastructure, deployment, testing, process, hiring, etc etc etcAardvark was acquired by Google in February 2010.

Started the Safe Browsing and Application Security teams, as well as the original browser project which later became Chrome. Individual contributor on a number of other Search and infrastructure projects, some of which made it, some of which didn't :)

Developed web-based content management systems. Co-authored the book JavaScript: The Complete Reference and tech edited books on HTML and Web Design.

Developed and maintained an anonymizing HTTP proxy.

Working on a large and incredibly boring system for the physical layout and verification of chips.
