Snr Metallurgical Engineer
Secunda
I joined Sastech in 1988 as a Senior Metallurgical Engineer. My main job function was to provide a comprehensive consulting service to the then Sasol 2 &3 plants. These services include failure analysis with respect to materials, welding, corrosion and heat treatment, mechanical testing of materials, material recommendations, drawing up of repair packages for pressurised equipment, risk assessments and remaining life assessments on equipment. Due to the complexity of the processes in the petrochemical plant my experience also involved decisions and responsibilities in other Engineering fields such as production, mechanical engineering, project management and quality. In 1989 I received my honours degree in metallurgical engineering (main subjects: heat treatment, welding and quality) at the UP. During this period all the Engineers-in –training reported to me where I acted as their mentor. I also initiated a company-wide training program to plant engineers for an awareness and appreciation of metallurgical failures within the petrochemical industry.I registered in 1991 as a Professional Engineer at the South African Council for Engineers (ESCA) Reg. No 910343 and Society for Professional Engineers (SPE) No 4545.During 1993 I was transferred to the central workshop division as manager to manage the heat treatment, pressure vessel and heat exchanger fabrication and machining facility of Sasol Synthetic Fuels . In 1996 SSF started with a major transformation process and I was transferred to the transformation team, where I was trained by an American consulting group as a facilitator in the Service Value Analysis team. Over the next 2 years I was involved as team leader for the transformation training of all the SSF Engineering divisions. The latter part of my career in SSF I was appointed as Senior Welding Engineer where I was responsible for all welding, heat treatment, refurbishment and fabrication within SSF.
