As sole point of contact for 2 recompression chambers on different vessels, I was charged with the management of defects, maintenance and testing on the recompression chambers and their associated support equipment, onboard a contracted vessel. Dealing with short turnaround windows due to both my own work program and the vessel’s unique roll has granted on occasion the chance for me to deal directly with the contractor to ensure both company and contractor commitments are immaculately fulfilled for the end user. The role has allowed me to establish further my organisational skills through conducting defect rectification and planned maintenance to be constantly in the frame of mind to de-conflict an ever-changing program. Being the sole engineer in a remote location the quality of information I communicated was vital to ensure the correct external support was made available when necessary, and on occasion required having the confidence and initiative to converse with the next higher authority(manufacturer) to minimise plant downtime and informing all relevant parties in due course, usually when the kit is being functionally tested or has been proved and is back online.

I joined the vessel as the section head and manpower coordinator for Domestics part of ship responsible for primarily galley and laundry equipment, with a wider umbrella capturing aviation fuel, bilge water treatment, firefighting, fresh water production, and waste processing equipment and system coaching commissioning, operation, defect investigation/rectification and maintenance management. Deep investigative work involved exposure to both general electrical, program control and mechanical diagnostics on the aforementioned equipment as well as a wider variety of machinery dependant on opportunity, peer experience and workload. Through defect identification and repair the opportunity was utilised to develop peer and subordinate knowledge of electrical machinery and systems while honing my tutoring technique. Holding the position of MEOOW 1 and 2 in both the machinery control room and through local operation maintaining safe and efficient operation of the 25.54MW propulsion plant and manpower while liaising with the OOW on a frigate presented the associated challenges of familiarising myself with the ethos of the bridge team to ensure maximum productivity was seamlessly delivered.
