Ameo (now part of FutureGov) is a small consultancy which provides advice and resources to organisations going through change. My role spanned the gap between business development and general brand awareness.I looked after Ameo's branding and marketing activities - creating promotional copy, leading bids and proposals, writing online content and upholding the company's public profile.

I wrote, edited and published two novels inspired by English folklore, then created a fact-based website to discuss the source material. First and foremost, my goal was to create an epic action adventure, but at the same time to show off a fascinating and little-known side to our early culture. My research involved visits to more than two hundred historic sites.My first book was published in 2015 and my second in 2017. A third novel is underway. This was a long-running role that combined team leadership and technical knowledge with brand promotion and customer engagement. My mission was to win clients, market the business and promote our work to the public. I became an accomplished bid manager - assembling teams, editing copy and giving presentations. I made good use of my writing skills, firstly as a bid writer and latterly as the Business Group's Plain English champion. My most valuable contribution, however, was in public relations - translating the work of engineers and engaging with stakeholders and communities to see that our message got through.As head of a nationwide team, I oversaw quality and co-ordinated work between eight offices, as well as recruiting staff, providing line management and delivering financial targets.

This was a largely promotion-focused role. My time was spent writing and editing regeneration plans, then building support for them among stakeholders. I supplied the words for numerous funding bids and presented design concepts at workshops and exhibitions. I also had important roles in marketing the business and in building connections between different parts of the company. I wrote half a dozen winning bid documents in my two years here.

Robert Turley Associates is a small consultancy focused on town planning and urban design. I joined as the company's first consultant in its new Birmingham office. My role was, therefore, as much about promoting the business as it was about delivering technical work. I produced our office's marketing materials and took these out to clients, while also winning planning permission for retail, leisure and mixed-use developments.While in this role, I sat on the leadership team of Birmingham Future, a networking organisation for young professionals in the city.

Stroud, United Kingdom

Despite the title, this was essentially a town centre regeneration post. My role was to promote the district's two largest towns, suggest short- and long-term improvements and find funding for them. Successes included a shopfront improvement grant, a living over the shop scheme and new shoppers' signposts cast at a local foundry. I also set up the intranet site for the Council's Development and Leisure Directorate.
