I am a coastal engineer responsible for leading complex data analysis and coastal structure design projects. As a lead coastal engineer, I am responsible for developing work plans and leading complex analysis project. This often involves performing wrangling, extreme value statistical analysis, and visualization for large amounts of coastal data for a project site. I also serve as a project manager, responsible for developing project scopes of work, budgets, and managing client interactions. A key role as project manager and lead engineer involves distilling complex coastal problems into a set of actionable analysis tasks that lead to a constructible final project.*Lead implementation of a statistical Joint Probability with Optimal Sampling methodology for characterizing storm surge risk. This methodology can be employed to increase confidence in extremal statistics, and often lower the design conditions resulting in a more economical structure design.*Developed machine learning models to identify restoration sites using tree-based algorithms and neural networks.*Performed detailed MetOcean analysis and numerical model processing using Python and MATLAB to capture site conditions and guide project design.*Helped develop coastal analysis functions written in Python to automate data retrieval and processing.*Routinely performed Extreme Value Analysis to estimate project design conditions and extremal recurrence intervals based on historic data.
Research Assistant
As a research assistant in the Coastal Engineering Department, I developed a thesis that developed a set of physics based Hurricane Wave Response Function (WRF’s) equations for three Gulf of Mexico coastal cities. The Wave Response Functions were used to quickly calculate maximum significant wave height from given storm parameters, such as track position, central pressure, radius to maximum winds, and forward velocity.Performed nondimensional analysis using MATLAB to determine the most relevant parameters affecting hurricane induced wave heights. This analysis was used to narrow down potential hurricane parameters used as input into the WRF’s. I then developed numerical simulations to determine a set of wave parameters at the project sites to train and optimize the WRF equations.The WRF methodology was used to assess risk and perform extreme value statistical analysis with much less computational burden than existing methods.
Reu Intern
Performed exploratory data analysis to develop to identify links between oyster habitats and seafloor geomorphology/water quality in the Delaware Bay. The analysis involved processing a large amount of data collected by an Autonomous Underwater Vehicle (AUV). I was responsible for exploring the data and developing data visualizations that compared benthic habitats in the Delaware Bay to overlying water column properties including salinity, turbidity, and temperature. The data analysis and visualization involved extensive coding in MATLAB.
