Information Technology industry generalist, with a wide variety of experience across several disciplines including:UNIX Systems Administrator, working in HPUX, AIX, and Solaris professionally, tinkering in Linux for fun.Storage Systems Architect, working with McData and Brocade SAN switches, EMC (Symmetrix, Clariion, and DMX) Hitachi (and HP XP) and IBM disk storage, and STK and IBM tape storage.Project Management, leading various projects related to application re-platforming, data center migrations, server upgrades, OS upgrades, new environment builds, and SAN migrations.Programmer with extensive experience in debugging non-structured C code, rewriting poorly-commented and overly complex shell scripts, and building interface connections between disparate systems using secure shell, ftp, kermit, and other protocols.Web server administrator, working with both Apache and Netscape.I prefer to approach projects with an open mind, thinking through what the best outcome would be and how to get there, learning from the past but not repeating it without analysis.

Senior Unix System Engineer (Remote)Ensono Oct 2015 - Mar 2020Managed systems patching across AIX and HP/UX server landscapes for several clients, including documenting and training on how to reliably perform patching.Upgraded, secured, and stabilized HP ServiceGuard clusters for several clients, reducing off-hours support calls and improving business continuity. Trained additional staff in how to perform business continuity testing. Developed and implemented cron schedule automation for clusters so automated jobs would remain with their respective applications. Configured NAS toolkit for clusters so network-attached and shared storage would remain with applications.Implemented HP Auto Port Aggregation across multiple clients; using both port fail-over and port-aggregation mode, depending on the big picture.Led yearly disaster recovery exercises, bringing up dozens of systems at an offsite location. Implemented process improvements and monitoring to significantly reduce time-to-live for UNIX systems without compromising security.Managed several server-based no-outage SAN migration projects across multiple clients, shuffling terabytes of data between arrays without downtime. -

PlenipotentiaryA.D.Ventures May 2008 - Jan 2011A.D. Ventures was (and may be again, should the need arise) a sole proprietorship consulting venture. I performed the bookkeeping, managed the health insurance (more of a challenge before the state exchanges), and completed and filed the tax forms. I have a very good appreciation of small business entrepreneurs, in large part because I have been there.

Contract Unix EngineerPepsico 2009 - Dec 2010Developed and implemented a tool for adding, deleting, and auditing consistency of more than 1,000 printer queues across 75 UNIX servers. The tool used SNMP to determine the model of the printer and network interface device, and then to perform appropriate diagnostics for several different manufacturers. This saved money and improved flexibility at remote locations, and significantly reduced time spent on printer management as part of administrator workload.Worked with Pepsi staff to improve and implement procedures to update firmware and patch the PepsiCo HP-UX 11.23 and 11.31 landscape across 18 HP Superdome complexes.Managed the network migration of 150 of Pepsi’s production and development nodes between two networks, changing IP addresses and in some cases cabling, all with no unplanned outages. This involved development of procedures, documentation, allocation and scheduling of resources, and monitoring progress during scheduled implementations.Supported the migration of the Pepsi SAP infrastructure from about 250 HP vPars on 18 Superdome systems to about 600 IBM Lpars on P570 hardware. -
Unix Systems AdministratorMolex, Inc. Apr 1999 - May 2008Designed and implemented a cross-platform menu-driven system to simplify common storage array tasks (sync mirror, split mirror, import volume groups, start tape backup, and other actions) across a variety of array models and vendors. This ensured Operations performance of these tasks were consistent and logged, regardless of the array vendor, or of any array configuration changes.Worked with SAP and Microsoft experts to create an integrated SAP, HPUX, and Microsoft Active Directory domain. Resulting "Single Sign On" used LDAP and GSS/API connections to link to Microsoft Active Directory, allowing fully centralized management of user accounts and passwords. Documented and trained UNIX staff to manage AD user IDs correctly.Documented procedures to perform both consistency checks of their UNIX business continuity site, and the procedures to perform a disaster recovery. This process allowed bringing up over a terabyte of SAP data within hours, and with no more than 15 minutes of lost data. Implemented HP OpenView Operations for UNIX, monitoring over 75 UNIX nodes in two Molex data centers. Developed and implemented custom OpenView Operations monitoring templates for specific business-critical functions, including web server, SAP, EDI, and others. This allowed teams for whom HP had not produced an integration package to receive automated alerts and address problems in a more timely fashion. Developed and implemented monitoring of McData, IBM, and Cisco hardware via HP’s Network Node Manager tool using SNMP. Integrated EMC’s Control Center product with HP OpenView, routing alerts from Symmetrix and Clariion arrays onto the same single screen for the Network Operations Center.Worked with array vendors including EMC, HP, and IBM to design and implement several iterations of SAN storage at Molex. SAN designs supported growth for the hardware life, and supported business continuity plans and regular automated data migration for QA testing. -
Unix Administrator / C ProgrammerFlorsheim 1997 - 1999Implemented Florsheim’s first company-wide email system, utilizing Microsoft Windows NT and Exchange for both messaging and authentication. A key success was interfacing Exchange with the existing UNIX e-mail server used by the field sales force, but not the headquarters staff. This made the transition nearly invisible to the sales force, which saved significant time.Performed regular patching for Florsheim’s SCO UNIX servers. Worked with SCO engineering to resolve connectivity problems in their TCP/IP implementation, improving reliability of data transmission from hundreds of store kiosks and from the regional managers and mobile sales force.Worked with KPMG and Platinum consultants to properly implement Platinum AutoSys, replacing isolated system-specific cron jobs, enabling Florsheim to control enterprise-wide job and job flow scheduling on diverse systems in one application suite.Migrated (rewrote) a legacy Motorola UNIX application to AIX, saving Florsheim significant legacy hardware repair costs.

C Coder, Unix Systems AdminFtd 1990 - 1997Maintenance programmer responsible for FTD’s Classic Mercury EDI / POS software package. Classic Mercury utilized the FTD Mercury Network, which provided order transfer and processing for over 10,000 florists. Classic Mercury was a C language application running on Novell MDOS. Maintenance included design and implementation of a system for source code control, formalized testing, and improvements to the CD-ROM-based distribution methods.Maintenance and enhancement programmer for FTD International Floral Order Exchange (IFOX) central processing system. IFOX utilized Sprint’s X.25 SprintNet packet switched network to provide connectivity between 27 national systems located in various countries. IFOX central servers ran on SCO System V UNIX. I developed and implemented automated order forwarding procedures and software for IFOX to automatically forward unprocessed orders to a nearby flower shop for faster delivery. This reduced nighttime support calls to the team by over 50%. -
