Optical design, model, and inspection of OLED displays.

This current work is divided into three projects: (1) design, fabrication, and characterization of Si and GaAs metamaterials, (2) measurement of optical losses in waveguides, and (3) modeling of the optical response of metallic and semiconductor nanostructures.

Created a new type of a photocathode for the Free Electron Laser. This work spanned five years from the conception to the practical demonstration of a working device.- Designed a first principle three-step model numerical model of photoemission from thin films.- Developed a new theoretical model for optoelectronic coupling in sub-diffraction arrays based on the numerical Finite Difference Time Domain optical simulation results.- Prepared a sub 10 nm 1:16 high aspect ratio silicon nano-fins using a high-resolution electron beam lithography and anisotropic wet etch. - Responsible for the first demonstration of complete light trapping in plasmonic nano-grooves on a metal surface using high resolution EBL lithography, dry and wet etch to produce ultra-smooth 16 nm wide grooves on a gold surface.- Designed and assembled a customized confocal microscope for optical characterization of plasmon- enhanced light trapping.- Successfully demonstrated the first operation of a plasmon-enhanced photocathode in a non-linear regime.

- Designed and assembled an experimental setup for investigating the magneto-optical Kerr effect. This work received a NSF REU fellowship.- Assembled a charge amplification system for characterizing the performance of a new type of 3D silicon strip detectors for the Large Hadron Collider upgrade.- Designed a model for simulating the diffusion dynamics in high-density polymer melts using a highly parallel computation approach. The results were submitted as a senior thesis.- Developed an experimental setup (hardware and software package: http://adap.ucsc.edu) for electrical characterization of the breakdown behavior of the silicon strip detector.
