Founded in 1989, the Institute for International Security and Conflict Resolution promotes an innovative, multidisciplinary perspective on issues vital to securing our future. Pottathil was appointed as the Vice President during the Prague BORDERPOL Global Forum in April 2018. He was previously appointed as the Director of Digital Borders by the BORDERPOL executive committee during the 2016 annual meeting in Budapest, Hungary. Then newly created position of Digital Borders enabled BORDERPOL to promote the digitization of borders, enhance global security, strengthen the fight against illicit trafficking, provide technology training, provide technology consultation, establish innovative partnerships, enhance strategic relationships, while developing sustainable global and regional certification programs in the Internet of Everything era. Until August 2021, Pottathil managed the entire technology and training component of the World Border Organization - BORDERPOL.

Pottathil designed and teaches the "Geospatial Intelligence" course (GEOG 596) at San Diego State University. Enrollment in this new course is open to undergraduate and graduate students in diverse degree programs across campus, including Journalism, Public Administration, Political Science, and Geography. It deals with evolving challenges for building geospatial intelligence, from content visualization to data analysis, remote sensing, and predictive mapping, all meant to address the needs of governmental and non-governmental organizations, domestically and internationally.
