Prevention Outreach Volunteer

London, Ontario, Canada

My role as a prevention outreach volunteer consists of delivering cancer prevention presentations and staffing display booths throughout the city of London, as well as participating in health promotion campaigns and projects that are run by the Canadian Cancer Society (CCS). Additional responsibilities included the facilitation of Minimal Contact Interventions (MCIs) with individuals at various community and fundraising events. MCIs allow for me to communicate health information in a similar manner to health professionals, but without directly providing them with medical advice. Rather, I equip individuals with preliminary information on various cancer topics, that they can then build onto themselves with further research. Finally, one of the most important aspects of my role includes participating in fundraising campaigns and events held by the CCS, which is vital to ensure the longevity of the services they provide. The CCS runs various health promotion campaigns, and as an outreach volunteer, it is my job to contact individuals at fundraising events and raise awareness about the issues at hand. As a result of my role, I am able to raise the awareness of many individuals from different ethnic and religious backgrounds, as well as different age groups about cancer prevention. Providing these individuals with this information, as well as access to additional resources, brings the community one step closer to beating cancer. Not only does my role in the organization help many individuals, but it also provides me with invaluable public speaking experience and an improvement in approaching and discussing sensitive topics with individuals.

May 2017 - Apr 2018

Cucoh Western Ambassador

As the Fourth Year Representative for Health Studies Students Association, my largest responsibility was to plan an HSSA-sponsored conference trip for undergraduate health studies students. This included identifying potential health conferences around North America. I along with the President decided to take 50 students to the Canadian Undergraduate Conference on Health Care (CUCOH) at Queen’s University. As a result of my role on this association, I was able to provide 50 students with a unique opportunity to expand their knowledge on current global health topics, participate in interactive medical workshops, and compete in case competitions in front of representatives of leading medical technology companies. More so, as part of taking on this initiative to send the second largest student body to the conference, I was named the CUCOH Ambassador for Western University. Not only was I able to provide students with a unique learning experience I am consistently able to communicate to and take part in assisting students with many other events and experiences that would enhance their learning at Western.

Sep 2017 - Dec 2017

Research Assistant

Research assistant under Dr. Jeannie Samuel, a Health Sciences professor at Western University My primary responsibility was to conduct literature searches and download references, abstracts of journal articles, and other pertinent resources. To complete this task, I learned to navigate a reference-management software that allowed me to easily compile the articles I collected over the course of the work study. This accumulation of resources and articles allowed Dr. Samuel to conduct her research more efficiently. I was also tasked with summarizing articles of Dr. Samuel’s choice so as to provide her with a deeper context for her research. One of my integral tasks involved creating a document that compiled different free software that can be used to create promotional health videos and infographics. This document was later provided to a women’s non-governmental organization in the Philippines by Dr. Samuel through the Global Affairs Canada advisory group. I was tasked with this because the health promoter that we were in contact with was not familiar with the different free-to-use softwares available to create promotional videos. As a result, the document I produced contained information about the software, including its uses and limitations, and samples of its video and infographic creating abilities. With this document, the health promoter was able to use the resources I compiled to create impactful promotional videos and infographics for free, which work to increase awareness of sexual and reproductive health issues amongst young people in the Philippines. My other responsibility as a part of the work study was taking over 150 references from articles written by Dr. Samuel and adding them to a reference-management software for her later use and convenience. This was important, as it ensured Dr. Samuel had easy access to all of her past work and previous references, thus allowing her research process to become more expedited and streamlined.
