My current role has 4 different pillars: The first is as the lead engineer which encompasses leading a team in the complete technical support to operations. This includes everything that allows operations to focus on their primary task. Events ranging from devops work, developing ETL data pipelines, system administrator work, application development, and designing/deploying internal and external network infrastructure. The second pillar is as the product manager and product owner. This process starts with requirement generation, which stems from either talking with the customer(s) to identify capability gaps or pain points, or identifying emerging technologies that could be of use to the organization in the future. This requirement generation is done in conjunction with the R&D office to create formal documentation that can be sent to vendors for proposal generation, followed by vendor selection, and then walking with that vendor throughout the development process as the product owner. During the development process, testing, feedback, and updated guidance is given to the vendors as needed, and ultimately I am responsible for technical accepting the products and integrating them into our environment.The third function is in creating and maintaining technical partnerships, this involves coordinating and communicating with external entities, both government and private. As the organization’s technical subject matter expert for offensive cyber, I meet with other government organizations to de-conflict efforts, align processes, and maintain those partnerships. Lastly, I advise senior leaders on operational risk and internal capabilities. This is done at all phases of an operation, and requires communicating at both a technical and non-technical level, depending on the audience.
