My first exposure to UX was around 2002, when a friend of mine suggested I look into Information Architecture and a guy named Jakob Nielsen. We were a small software company building our own CMS and creating websites at the time so in addition to design, I was also handling customer service. It was during this time that I started to notice a disconnect between how things are built and how users perceive and understand those things.I then went on to do freelance work. I wanted to find a free CMS that could allow my customers to update their own sites without knowing how to code so I chose DotNetNuke. I quickly discovered—after a 2-hour training session with a client—that software can be extremely intimidating to people and features don't necessarily guarantee use. This was when I began doing usability testing and iterative design.Eventually I was hired as a web developer for a company where I would take on a massive multi-company rebranding effort and also handle the design efforts for a customer information center named, Vagus. My boss at the time recommended I read a book by Edward Tufte called, The Visual Display of Quantitative Information.That book completely changed my approach to information design since I had never really thought about how the way we present data can completely change how people perceive it. I always strive for integrity and to have empathy for both end users as well as whatever companies or organizations I work with.
