As an Analyst intern in Downstream Capital Cost Service (DCCS) within S&P Global Commodity Insights team, I was responsible for costing refinery and petrochemical projects predefined by the team to estimate capital cost index. The aim of the DCCS is to help clients better anticipate changes in the cost associated with building new downstream refinery and petrochemical projects both Greenfields and expansion, projected out to 2050. Downstream capital cost index is a global measure of escalation over time that tracks cost of equipment, facilities, materials, and procurement cost related to construction of refineries and petrochemicals facilities This involved extensive research and cost analysis about the project in terms of capacity, processes, commissioning timelines.The 2nd phase of the project was around costing individual process by utilizing process engineering documents to come up with cost breakup, reverse engineering. Third phase is costing the project for different locations where the actual projects are being constructed beyond US by incorporating location factors. Finally escalating the costs for the Q2 2023 for all the processes to get the latest cost estimated of the processes as compared to old DCCS which was based on costs from 2006.During the internship I extensively utilized excel, strategic cost analysis, fixed and variable costs, reverse engineering and impact of external factors, geopolitical changes on the costs.
