Successful coordination of large multidisciplinary international research teams and projects, with a wide range of scientific experience including over 180 invited research seminars/chairman at international scientific conferences and research centres/universities, supervision of 49 previous and current PhD students, and running or associated with >30 human intervention studies.Current research interests in how dietary polyphenols, bioactive molecules found in many plant-based foods, beverages and supplements, are absorbed, and the mechanisms by which they reduce the risk of cardiovascular disease and type 2 diabetes. The research combines the areas of chemistry, biochemistry, cell biology, molecular biology, and pharmacology together with nutrition and food science. Scientific discoveries include major advances in understanding of dietary polyphenol bioavailability and biological activity, including the structures of metabolites, their metabolic pathways and effects on sugar metabolism, using both cell models and human volunteers.
