I am a researcher and lab manager in the Weeks Lab at UNC in the Department of Chemistry. I develop technologies that merge chemistry, molecular biology, next-generation sequencing, and bioinformatics to determine primary, secondary, and tertiary structural features of RNA. I assist and train graduate and undergraduate students and post-doctoral researchers in lab techniques and computational tasks, and assist with hypotheses and data interpretation. Another 20% of my time is dedicated to management of the lab: assuring a culture of chemical, biological, and radiation safety and regulatory compliance, tracking inventory, and purchasing supplies.

Responsibilities include assessing gene expression and protein localization of a novel gene of interest across cell lines, budgeting my own materials, assisting researchers' with their work load, and assisting a periodontology resident to learn lab techniques and protocols and to plan his Master's thesis project. Common protocols include media preparation, cell culturing, experimental treatment of cell lines, molecular isolation of protein, DNA, and RNA, qRT-PCR, and western blotting (immunostaining of cells, IHC, and/or immunofluorescence in the near future.)

From 4:30am to 1:00pm, I baked 500 to 1,000 bagels daily, five to six days each week. During the pre-Thanksgiving rush, we sold, and I baked, 4,000 of the best bagels in Chapel Hill by 3:00pm. It may seem trivial, but I'm proud of this accomplishment.
