Principal Software Engineer

Current

Bristol, England, United Kingdom

Aug 2020 - Present

Senior Software Engineer

Bristol, United Kingdom

At BluWireless I have continued honing my skills in developing and maintaining user-space Linux software, as well as gaining knowledge about other software engineering approaches and techniques. I continue to write C++ software, now with the more modern C++17 standard, in a brand new project, where I am contributing significantly in the CMake build system and catch2 unit testing framework as well as the C++ code base. This particular project has allowed me to get familiar with the Lua scripting language, its C API, and how to create C++ bindings for it using SWIG. I have also worked on projects using a number of languages and technologies new to me, including GoLang, FreeRADIUS, and Django. I have had the chance of getting familiar with Ansible, which I am currently harnessing while putting a CI system in place with Zuul for the aforementioned project. I have also been able to contribute to a number of Python projects.

Principal Software Engineer

Bristol, United Kingdom

I have worked on maintaining and developing features for multiple in-house distributed database systems. I have experience with a variety of agile methodologies, such as feature driven development, test driven development, and Kanban.During my time with Nokia, I have specialised in both procedural and object oriented programming, using C and C++, though I also have some experience with Java and C#. I can also script in Bash, Python and Perl. Different projects I've worked on have allowed me to get to good grips with Git and SVN version control systems as well as multiple Linux distributions. I have worked extensively with the CMake build system, as well as touching upon automake.I have led a feature team and seen it to completion, from requirement analysis and design, all the way through to testing and development support, through resourcing and multiple other problems.I have also worked on individual projects, such as setting up a fully automated testing framework mimicking DevOps, using OpenStack, Jenkins and Robot, as well as refactoring a core system process - utilising a variety of design patterns with the aim to reduce coupling and complexity, increase test coverage, improve testability and maintainability of the code, and implement robust fixes for previously discovered bugs.I have also had plenty of opportunities to develop my communication skills. Part of this is due to the benefit I've had to work for a multinational company, where co-workers are located across multiple time zones. This includes working closely with technical support and customer teams, providing easily digestible updates on ongoing investigations without getting overly technical.I have also had to deliver training to my peers on multiple occasions. This includes bringing colleagues up to speed on a project, acting as a proxy between external contractors and local team, as well as mentoring students on a sandwich placement.

Jun 2013 - Mar 2019

Associate

Jd Wetherspoon

Working as bar and waiting staff in Wetherspoon’s pub in Aberystwyth. Duties included providing excellent customer service: serving drinks, snacks, food, keeping the pub tidy and ensure all customers are satisfied. The job helped me further develop my communication, problem solving and team building skills. Communication between colleagues and customers is key to ensure everything is done to the highest standard. During busy times it was important to stay focused and not panic for the work to continue as best and efficiently as possible.

Jan 2012 - May 2013

Student Software Engineer

Plan, design, create, test and debug software for embedded platforms for many different customers from all over the world. It involved working in a team and coordinating with my project managers and other team members, attending meetings - many of them being conference calls with the customer, getting tasks done within a certain time frame. The placement greatly improved my technical knowledge on areas I worked on and I found myself achieving tasks I thought I’d never be able to attempt.
