Puvan was appointed as a Special Procedures Mandate Holder (UN Special Rapporteur) by the UN Human Rights Council at its 17th Session. Representing the Asian Region and to bring views and experience directly from Business and the Private Sector to this Working Group of five experts succeeding Prof John Ruggie (Special Representative of the Secretary General on Business and Human Rights). During his mandate Puvan reported to the UN General Assembly, conducted official Country Visits to the United States and Azerbaijan, chaired the 1st Annual Forum on Business and Human Rights, and led work to develop guidance for corporate risk in human rights. His first mandate of 3 years was extended for a second term in 2015. Puvan resigned upon taking up a full UN staff role with the International Trade Centre, a joint agency of the UN and WTO.
