This project was a continuation of my master’s work. It includes writing, editing, and analysis toward publishing two papers from my thesis. This funding also allowed me to work toward a third paper exploring the functionality of the mid-infrared bi-spectral index for assessing low-severity fire effects in a conifer forest.

This position was primarily focused on preparing my thesis focused on assessing burn severity using multi-temporal LiDAR. This is where I began to form the thesis chapters into papers for journal submission. I also spent a week in Central Idaho measuring post-fire effects.

At this unpaid internship, I worked independently and in collaboration with other interns to map and inventory BLM lands for designation as Lands with Wilderness Characteristic (LWC). We used iPads (w/ GeoJot+) and Google Earth to accomplish this. The areas we mapped were later developed into proposals that were submitted to the BLM. I helped develop the technical report for the “Booger Red, Bare Hills, The Bank”, of which, a majority was considered LWC by the BLM in the 2015.

I performed construction staking as part of a survey crew using high-accuracy Trimble GPS and optical instruments. We worked on large projects, including an expansion of a Centennial airport runway and bridges for the DIA transit rail.

I conducted land cover mapping, construction staking, and property surveying primarily as a junior party chief. This required skilled operation of Trimble and Topcon high-accuracy GPS and optical instruments. Problems would develop at real-time in the field, which meant I could not always rely on support from office staff. This required flexibility in a rapidly changing environment, attention to detail, creativity, and continual problem solving.
