After almost 25 years with NCS as a contractor at Microsoft, I am updating my resume as NCS closes after 30 years of service to Microsoft. NCS has been a great place to work with great people and a great place for me to learn and grow. From being hired as a Move, Add, Change Technician for desk phones and learning to troubleshoot wiring issues, to building a custom provisioning system for Microsoft’s internal Teams environment, I have embraced automation to identify and reduce manual processes.On the way to current my role as a Software Engineer, I fulfilled multiple roles for NCS, and at each step I have sought to automate some part of the process to make the job more streamlined. When I was asked to start enabling Enterprise Voice on large groups of users the workload of manually processing each change led me to seek out a more efficient way to do it. So, a co-worker and I put together a SQL Server database to manage Microsoft's phone numbers worldwide. I then expanded this into a system that tracks each user in Microsoft's Teams environment, what phone number they have been assigned and where they are located based on HR data. Then through a combination of Azure technologies the system checks to see that they are always provisioned properly for their current location. This system handles the day-to-day changes of for the enterprise environment, either from the system itself or from user facing Power Apps. It also handles system policy changes that need to be applied to users. On average this is about 1200 changes per day but can be over 130,000 changes per day. This has greatly reduced the time to enable, the time for changes to replicate to thousands of users and increased the reliability of the service. Over time my tools have evolved from an Excel spreadsheet with VBA code, Server Scheduled Tasks and SQL Server, to Power Apps backed by Power Automate, Azure SQL, Azure Automation Runbooks, Microsoft Graph, Azure Data Factory with reports in Power BI.Currently I am managing Microsoft's employee phone numbers worldwide and adapting to changes and new technologies in the Microsoft environment. I am always looking for ways to improve both myself and the products I am responsible for and looking forward to my next challenge.
