Wrote and edited journalistic, educational, and technical materials (including grant applications) for a variety of outlets. My primary project during this time was coauthoring a textbook, "BioBuilder: Synthetic Biology in the Lab," aimed to introduce high school and college students to an emerging field as a supplement to traditional biology curricula.

As part of the team that managed the multidisciplinary open-access journal PLOS ONE, I: - Worked with a global network of scientific authors and editors to manage the peer review process- Monitored the peer review process and effects of various policies to identify opportunities for improvement, including work presented at the International Congress on Peer Review and Biomedical Publication- Developed and enforced editorial policies, for example related to research and publication ethics, data sharing, and copyright- Led special projects, including managing the development and launch of a new review submission form and monitoring the effects of its adoption

As a graduate student researcher in Susan Marqusee's lab studying protein folding and structure, I developed a simple gel-based method to detect and characterize rarely populated partially unfolded protein conformations under equilibrium conditions. Using this method on a well characterized model enzyme, I identified previously unknown conformations. I further investigated these conformations using standard biophysical tools to validate the new method, which also revealed new insight into the protein's behavior.
