I am currently enrolled as a PSW student in Windsor enrolled at TriOS College with an expected graduation date in May 2023. After graduating I hope to work in a long-term care home or hospital focusing on Palliative Care. In 2017 a close friend suffered a stroke at 38 yrs. old that paralyzed the left side of his body, and affected his speech, memory and cognitive function, mobility, and independence.I provided in home care to this individual for the next 3 years, assisting with basic needs such as hygiene, dressing, showering/bath, toileting, meal preparation, laundry, emotional support and encouragement. I scheduled and managed all his medical appointments, which include specialist appointments with his cardiologist and neurologist, family doctor, botox treatments, physical and occupational therapy, speech therapy, psychiatric counselling, and blood work. During his physical and occupational therapy sessions, as well as, his speech therapy sessions, I actively participated by providing morale support, asked questions, learned basic movement and stretching techniques I could use at home to promote his chances of regaining limb function. I also received worksheets of simple speech activities to complete with him to improve cognitive function in his brain responsible for speech. l tracked and administered all his medications, noting any changes in the dosage made by his doctor (especially his warfarin as that was initially changed often after leaving the hospital in accordance with his INR results)During this time I was holding down a part-time job working as a cashier at No Frills in Essex, as well.It was one of the most challenging experiences I encountered, however, I was able to gain new knowledge about stroke and stroke care, improve upon my time management skills, organizational skills and multi-tasking abilities. It also sparked my interest in entering the healthcare field as a PSW. In 2021 I took a position as a housekeeping aid(casual part-time) at Aspen Lake in Tecumseh, ON. This job cemented my decision to advance my career as a PSW. I enjoyed the social interactions between myself and many of the residents. The COVID-19 pandemic was at it's peak and residents were restricted to their rooms and missing their loved ones. Being able to bring a smile to their face and encourage their interests and hobbies boosted their morale.I hope to find a part-time position during the day between 8am - 4 pm as my college classes start at 5pm. I would be available throughout the day in the weekends.
