Design Thinking Facilitator
The Academy works to engage all 35,000+ UMD students with creativity and innovation by teaching design thinking methods and tools while embedded in core curriculum, providing students opportunities to work across disciplines on problems they're passionate about, and challenging students to creatively solve real-world problems in their courses. I work closely with faculty to shape learning experiences that expose students to design thinking methods. This methodology involves experiential, discovery-based learning where students seek out, interview, and observe real people in the field to gain insights and learn the nuances of real-world problems and needs. Then students quickly and iteratively test many concepts, learning from ones that work and more importantly from ones that fail, until they ultimately begin to reach innovative solutions.

Design Leadership MA/MBA ProgramForecasting and Realization CourseCourse DescriptionWhat problem are you solving? This is the first and most critical question entrepreneurs grapple with when designing a new product or service and one we will explore in depth in this eight-week studio class. Emphasis is placed on identifying divergent or ‘wicked’ problems and market opportunities through user research, rapid prototyping, and measurement. Students engage in research focused on identifying unique market opportunities through a deep understanding of the user, which is the foundation for creating products and services that solve real problems and create long-term impact. Led by continuous research cycles, students will test and prototype their designs, create a market entry strategy, and employ methods for testing their assumptions and insights.Course OutlineForecasting | predict or anticipate a potential future Realization | the fulfillment or achievement of something desired or anticipatedThis studio class explores forecasting approaches and human considerations impacting the design of solutions. We also grapple with the complex and imperfect process of making the desired future real.
