Biomechanics And Biomaterials Project - Student Research
My team's project was focused on the effectiveness of orthotics for Plantar Fasciitis, Achilles Tendonitis, and Pes Cavus to alleviate symptoms and improve gait mechanics. The data was captured through the use of Tekscan's In-Shoe F-Scan equipment. F-Scan is a type of pressure measurement system used to analyze foot function during the gait cycle. It involves embedding thin pressure-sensing sensors within the shoe to collect data on pressure distribution and foot movements while walking or running. With this equipment, my classmates and I were able to capture peak pressure points, pressure distribution, and other metrics about how the participants' feet interacted with the orthotics during different phases of the gait cycle.Plantar Fasciitis, Achilles Tendonitis, and Pes Cavus are common foot conditions that can cause discomfort and affect gait mechanics. Plantar Fasciitis refers to inflammation of the plantar fascia, Achilles Tendonitis involves inflammation of the Achilles tendon, and Pes Cavus is a condition characterized by an abnormally high arch of the foot. After collecting the pressure data, our team used statistical analysis tools to process and interpret the results. Microsoft Excel with the Data Analysis ToolPak and Minitab were used for statistical analysis in this research. These tools allowed us to analyze and compare the pressure data from different participants and orthotic designs. Through the quantification of data, we were able to draw conclusions about the effectiveness of each orthotic type for the targeted foot conditions.
Senior Design Project - Student Research
Demonstrated strong leadership and project management skills by leading a multidisciplinary team in the successful development of a 10x10 electro-tactile stimulation array for sending alphanumeric messages through skin stimulation.Utilized precision machining techniques, including lathes and belt sanders, to fabricate domed concentric ring electrodes for the electro-tactile array, ensuring optimal performance and functionality.Effectively managed project expenses by utilizing Microsoft Excel and Word to track and control expenditures, maintaining adherence to budgetary constraints throughout the project lifecycle.Developed and maintained detailed GANTT charts, enabling efficient scheduling, task tracking, and timely project completion, resulting in the successful delivery of the project within the predetermined timeline.Assessed the safety, efficiency, and effectiveness of the electrode array, following industry standards and guidelines, leading to the approval of the project for human testing by the Mercer Institutional Review Board (IRB).Collaborated with senior design team to prepared Preliminary and Critical Design Review documents and engaging presentations, effectively communicating technical concepts and project progress to stakeholders and faculty advisors.
Research That Reaches Out - Research Assistant
Collaborated with team under the guidance of Dr. Laura Moody in the Quality Enhancement Program (QEP) to conduct a research project on finger push strength and usability data among older adults (age range of 60 to 95).Conducted comprehensive literature reviews to establish a strong theoretical foundation for the research, integrating relevant studies on ergonomics, human factors, and usability principles concerning older adult populations.Designed and executed data collection procedures, including obtaining informed consent and for assessing finger push forces exerted on a force gauge by older adult participants under varying joint angles, heights, and age groups.Utilized statistical analysis in Minitab to process and interpret data, identifying significant relationships between joint angle, height, age, and finger push forces to draw meaningful conclusions for product design implications.Employed qualitative research methods to identify key characteristics of product design using household items (e.g., telephones, remotes, can openers) that enhance usability for older adults, conducting user interviews and focus groups to gather valuable insights.Applied quantitative research techniques to analyze common words used in product design to ascertain the language and terminology preferences of older adult users, facilitating improved communication in product development.Presented research findings and product design insights to stakeholders and industry professionals, effectively communicating complex information to both technical and non-technical audiences.Demonstrated strong project management skills by coordinating data collection schedules, overseeing data entry processes, and adhering to project milestones, ensuring the timely completion of the research project.
