My project investigated the presence and prevalence of pseudo-stalked barnacles found attached to local bottlenose dolphins. I edited photos of dolphins to focus on dorsal fins containing barnacles and collected data on the overall coverage on each fin and the prevalence among dolphins. Other duties included assisting in photo-ID surveys within the Inter-coastal Waterway and off the NC coast. As a part of the internship I wrote a paper in which the data was also used in a professional paper published by the laboratory I worked for. Experience was gained with ACDSee photo-editing software and Microsoft Excel.Resulting paper submitted for publishing:Read, A.J., K.W. Urian, D.M. Waples, Z.T. Swaim, H.J. Foley and R. Kaufmann. 2013. Stock discrimination of bottlenose dolphins along the Outer Banks of North Carolina; implications for the risk of entanglement in coastal gill net fisheries. Final Report for Marine Mammal Project 10DMM01 to North Carolina Sea Grant Bycatch Reduction Program.
