Having benefitted from graduate training at Arthur Andersen and Marks & Spencer, Rachel decided she wanted to put her financial and business acumen to use in the not-for-profit sector, holding senior roles at Shelter, and the Refugee Council. More recently Rachel has been CEO at Amaze, growing the charity which supports children and young people with disabilities. There she recognised the importance of harnessing the knowledge, skills and voice of local people and communities.Born in Newcastle, Rachel grew up a proud Geordie, and remembers climbing trees and fells in the beautiful Northumberland and Lake District National Parks. After studying in Nottingham and working in Leeds, London and Paris, she got the travelling bug and enjoyed exploring further afield.“I feel immensely privileged, while younger, to have visited so many incredible places and see so many diverse landscapes and wildlife first hand – diving on the Great Barrier Reef, walking in the Costa Rica rainforest, hiking up Mount Kilimanjaro and observing animals on safari in Namibia.”Fast-forward two decades and Rachel has two teenage children who are unlikely to be able to have the same adventures. “My children are very anxious about climate change and have said that they do not feel they will be able to have children. They have challenged me, and my generation, who have benefited so much from over consumption/consumerism, to do whatever we can to make a difference for the generations who follow. So, I am passionate about taking up my position with Rainforest Trust UK, as protecting these landscapes offers the most effective way to store carbon and provide biologically critical ecosystems and habitat for so many endangered species.”Rachel became CEO of Rainforest Trust UK in September'22 and is focused on growing and developing the organisation, the British supporter base, partnerships and income from major donors. Amaze is a local charity working to support families with children and young people with special educational needs and disabilities in Sussex. My role as CEO includes the strategic development and operational management of the organisation, including leading over 40 staff and 70 volunteers. I build relationships and work closely with colleagues across Sussex working to support families with disabled children.
