About R. Adam Bilodeau

I am a Mechanical Engineer interested in materials science, mechanical design, and the interplay between our electronics and physical systems. I believe that a thorough understanding of the unique characteristics of each material (especially polymeric materials and composites) allows us to design a whole new class of tools where multifunctionality is integrated into a system at a material level. I have gained experience designing, building and troubleshooting PCBAs to further my own projects as well as for projects around me. Though not formally educated as an electrical engineer, my work has given me ample opportunity to appreciate the vast complexities involved in designing circuits, control systems, and feedback mechanisms that allow our modern world to operate.My graduate research was in the Soft Robotics field, applying multifunctional materials into soft robotic component design, and investigating the coupling of manufacturing and design in order to extract maximum functionality out of these materials. My pre-graduate research included investigations in nano-composite silicone materials.I enjoy teaching and colaborating. I have had the chance to share my knowledge, through formal classroom instruction opportunities, conference-type presentations, and other informal teaching moments during my Ph.D. studies. I strongly believe that gaining knowledge is only half of the goal of a higher education, and disseminating knowledge to others in an engaging, useable manner is the other half. I also believe that a strong partnership can produce work that is both better and faster than two individuals working on their own.

Characterizing Human Lower Back Pain: NIH funded project.Managed a team of students investigating the sensor materials, improved the sensor response by stabilizing material performance. Managed a team of students learning, redesigning, and improving the electrical hardware (and software) used to gather data from the mobile human subject, and report that data over bluetooth.Corrected and redesigned the portable electronics systems for data gathering. Designed a PCBa to provide a minimally sized, analog, battery level indicator so that researchers have an easy way to determine if the PCB battery is low. Within weeks of beginning, corrected fatal project errors to prevent project missing major key milestones and even complete failure. Rapid work directly resulted in procurement of $2M additional grant money.Supported graduate students in their research while producing original research of my own.3D Printed Silicone Vocal Folds: NIH funded, multi-university project. Designed and built a 2000RPM custom centrifuge to remove air from high-viscosity fluids contained in syringes and disposible cups. Implemented controls systems and safety features, along with proper mechanical design principles, to ensure the system would not harm itself or others.Investigated a method to print millimeter-scale open voids inside of 3D printed silicone vocal fold models. I started off interpreting Spanish after returning from learning the language in Argentina for two years. I was initially heavily involved in interpreting for Parent Teacher conferences (and other school events) in the local community. I was a research assistant in a conductive composites lab. We explored the conductivity curve of a highly flexible silicone-Nickel Nanostrand (NiN) composite material. We worked on developing and improving a model that explains interactions between the fiber and matrix on the nano scale. In 2015, I had a paper published from my work here. This paper presents a new model to explain the molecular interaction that was validated by experimental data gathered through a series of tests I proposed.
