About Rachel Dutton
I am a scientist fascinated by the untapped potential of microbes. As a Science Resident at the Astera Institute, I am building an early stage start-up at the intersection of fermented foods, human health, and open science. Previously, I was a founding scientist at Arcadia Science, and before that ran an academic lab for 12 years, first as a Bauer Fellow at Harvard University then Professor at UC San Diego. My research focused on understanding the complexity of microbial life using simplified microbial communities from cheese. Our research was featured in Wired Magazine, Lucky Peach Magazine, The Mind of a Chef TV series on PBS, Cooked on Netflix, Ada Twist, Scientist on Netflix, the Boston Globe, Edible Boston, NPR, and the New York Times.
Listed skills include Molecular Biology, Biochemistry, Cell Biology, Genetics, and 12 others.

Bauer Fellow, Principal Investigator
My lab in the FAS Center for Systems Biology uses cheese as a model system for understanding microbial communities.
Graduate Student
Beckwith Lab, Department of Microbiology and Molecular Genetics, Harvard Medical SchoolMy PhD work focused on the diversity and genetics of disulfide bond formation pathways across the bacterial tree of life. We identified a new type of pathway used by M. tuberculosis and other bacteria, which is related to the warfarin-sensitive protein (VKOR) in the human blood coagulation system. After finding that M. tuberculosis growth was sensitive to warfarin, we developed drug screens to identify more potent and specific inhibitors of the bacterial VKOR, as potential new classes of antibiotics.
Research Assistant
I used biochemical assays and bacterial genetics to characterize the regulatory interaction between proteins (FliX and FlbD) involved in flagellar development in Caulobacter crescentus.
Research Assistant
Research in Kit Pogliano's lab studying the cell biology and genetics of sporulation in Bacillus subtilis.
