I am passionate about helping people live in dignity through addressing the governance and public policy challenges that affect economic growth and development, especially in fragile and conflict-affected states.As a co-founding partner of DeepRoot Consulting (www.deeproot.consulting) I've been closely engaged in advising key stakeholders in my home country Yemen on political, economic, and development priorities in Yemen, and led the delivery of large-scale development and peacebuilding programs in the country.As a fellow of practice at Oxford University’s Blavatnik School of Government, I lead global engagements for the State Fragility initiative at the International Growth Centre, where I convene the Council on State Fragility which brings together eminent global leaders from the public, private, and academic sectors to advance new ideas and evidence-based thinking in global fora and build consensus on new approaches to address state fragility (www.fragilitycouncil.org). I also co-organize the annual DFI fragility forum, which brings together senior-level decision-makers from Development Finance Institutions to engage in an action-oriented discussion on how to improve the effectiveness of private sector investment in fragile settings (www.dfifragilityforum.org).I previously served as Minister of Youth and Sports and prior to that I led the Policy Reforms team at the government’s Executive Bureau. This experience has given me extensive and invaluable insights into driving change and contributing to economic development from within government structures.I chair the board of trustees of Resonate! Yemen (www.resonateyemen.org), the leading foundation in Yemen working on engaging youth in the development of their communities.

In this role, I have coordinated the school’s research and engagement activities in the field of public administration in fragile and conflict-affected states. I led the design and launch of Oxford’s first-ever Massive Open Online Course (MOOC) with Professor Sir Paul Collier which reached over 130,000 learners.I am the Global Engagement Lead for the State Fragility initiative at the International Growth Center, where I am the Convenor of the Council on State Fragility co-chaired by former Liberian President Ellen Johnson Sirleaf, former UK Prime Minister David Cameron, and former President of the African Development Bank Donald Kaberuka. I led the launch of a global Call to Action on scaling-up energy investments in fragile states, successfully partnering with over 50 high-level signatories including 11 current and former heads of states and governments, UN agencies, multilateral development banks, global philanthropic foundations, research institutions, and leading private sector companies. My previous roles include managing the LSE-Oxford Commission on State Fragility, Growth and Development to define a new approach to state fragility and international aid. During this time, I supervised the commissioning of 20 background studies and 6 high-level evidence sessions to draft and launch the commission’s landmark report “Escaping the Fragility Trap”.In addition, I headed the secretariat of the Pathways for Prosperity Commission on Technology and Inclusive Development, working closely with the Commission’s co-chairs Melinda Gates (co-chair of the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation), Sri Mulyani Indrawati (former Managing Director and COO of the World Bank and former Minister of Finance of Indonesia), and Strive Masiyiwa (founder and executive chairman of Econet Group) to catalyze a new global approach aimed at making frontier technologies work for the benefit of some of the world’s poorest and most marginalized men and women.
