About Rahsaan Thomas

Rahsaan “New York” Thomas first began working with the Ear Hustle podcast team in the fall of 2017 on an episode called, Catch a Kite season 3, where we get incarcerated people to answer listeners questions about life inside. He also wrote for several publications including The Marshall Project, Apogee Journal, Current, The Boston Globe and Stranger’s Guide. He paroled Feb. 8, 2023, thanks to a commutation from Governor Gavin Newsom, and was hired a producer for Ear Hustle with Catch a Kite season 11. Additionally, Rahsaan is the Executive Director of Empowerment Ave, a program normalizing the inclusion of incarcerated artists, writers, and journalists in mainstream spaces and publications. Also, Rahsaan developed a love for making documentaries after appearing in United Shades of America with W. Kamau Bell, Q-Ball, and 26.2 to Life: The San Quentin Marathon. He produced What These Walls Won’t Hold, which won the San Francisco Film Festival and directed a short documentary called, Friendly Signs.
