Research Assistant
I worked on novel thermal storage material (CCM-A) under the guidance of Ari Seppälä and Annukka Santasalo-Aarnio of the Energy conversion research group. The work involved experimental investigation to help identify the critical cooling rate for crystallisation of CCM-A. I studied how the addition of graphite nanoparticles will impact the crystallisation using a DSC analysis as well. In addition, I also studied the influence of roughness of the additive on the crystallisation.
Bachelor Thesis Student
Under the guidance of Dr. Kumaresan Vellaisamy, Associate Professor, I worked on developing phase change materials having good heat transfer characteristics for thermal energy storage application, eliminating undesirable effects such as subcooling by using nanofluids. Investigated the solidification characteristics of water dispersed with the natural graphite flake additives at various concentrations in a spherical encapsulation for various parameters such as water bath temperature and the size of the capsule. I also developed a numerical model using COMSOL Multiphysics for the same.

Summer Intern
Numerical simulation and instability analysis of the discharge process in a thermocline based Thermal Energy Storage System (TES) were performed under the guidance of Dr. Manu K Vasudevan, Associate Professor. The major objective of this project is to design a molten salt-based thermocline tank and to identify the optimal geometry of inlet and to minimize the thickness of the thermocline formed. The Thermal energy storage tank was modelled in ANSYS Design Modeler and the thermocline formed during various inlet conditions was analyzed using ANSYS FluentFrom November - December 2017, I used Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) to investigate numerically the thermal stratification phenomena in a double thermal storage tank. I also studied the early times of the discharging process which tend to have a significant effect on the thermal mixing and the associated energy losses.
