Professor Ralf Weber heads the Dresden University’s Color Teaching and Research Collection that functions as the nucleus for interdisciplinary studies of color, light and space in the sciences and arts. He has previously been Professor of Architecture and Chair of Spatial Design at the Faculty of Architecture, Dresden University of Technology as well as Senior Research Professor. He has held various offices in AIC International Color Association and is also a member of the AIC Study Group on Environmental Color Design. In addition to his academic career he maintains a small architectural practice focussing on projects in adaptive reuse and historic preservation.He received his Diploma in Architecture at the University of Dresden. Thereafter, he practiced architecture in Stuttgart in the joint venture Rolf Gutbrodt/Frei Otto and taught at Stuttgart University before moving to Berkeley, CA in 1980 where he received a PhD in Design Methodology, Environmental Psychology and Aesthetics. He taught for several years at UC Berkeley in Architecture and Visual Studies before he returned to Dresden after the reunification of Germany, when he was appointed Chair for Spatial Design in Architecture. He has held visiting professorships in Ankara, Kent State, Florence, Potsdam, and at the University of Oregon, Eugene.Ralf Weber has been Dean of Academic Affairs at Dresden University for two terms and created the new Diploma curriculum structure. He is also a member of ASIIN Accreditation Board and has participated in numerous reviews of architecture programs at a national and international level.In his teaching and research he attempts to build bridges between the disciplines of architecture and design on the one hand and the theories of aesthetics and visual perception on the other. He has taught Design Foundations and Architectural Design studios as well as lecture courses and seminars in university education and now teaches international seminars and workshops in these areas.Since he does not believe in a schism between theory and practice, he enjoys hands-on architectural design as well as working on research projects in architectural theory and aesthetics. He is the internationally published author of: On the Aesthetics of Architecture; Aesthetics and Architectural Composition; and Thema Material as well as numerous articles bridging the fields of architecture, aesthetics and psychology. In recent years, he has shifted his focus on the application of color theory to the practice of design. He is the organiser of the biannual symposium Dresdner Farbenforum.
