As professor of Botany at Degree college solan and Deputy Director. For many years led the core interdisciplinary program teaching students science communication across the Faculty of Science. Within the School of Biological Sciences, I lead the Plant Ecophysiology Group. The focus of my research is on how climate change impacts food security. I study the effect of environmental variables such as drought and elevated carbon dioxide on the partitioning of resources between growth and defence in plants (especially the many plants that contain cyanide). My research aims to reduce the amount of cyanide in the diet of humans and animals. I lead several industry-sponsored (on sorghum) and philanthropic projects (on cassava and taro) with health professionals and agricultural scientists in Australia, Denmark, Mozambique and Fiji.
