PhD in Chemical Engineering in the Lahann Lab, 2012-2018 Polymer brushes of tunable composition, architecture and biological functionality can be created by growing biomimetic polymer chains from substrate-bound initiator sites through controlled rad ical polymerization (CRP). I employ CRP extensively to create robust and modular polymer brush interfaces that can fulfill design criteria for numerous biomedical applications. I seek to understand how biomaterial surfaces are transformed when they come in contact with cells, pathogens and biomolecules, and then apply this knowledge to obtain desirable biointerfacial outcomes, be it the rapid self-renewal of pluripotent stem cells, the inhibition of viral binding or the phenotypically selective capture of macrophages. By using theoretical and statistical models to guide coating design and synthesis, I have addressed two challenges in the design of biomedical coat- ings. First, I developed a property-prediction tool to identify polymer brush attributes that would maximize the rate of human embryonic stem cell (hESC) proliferation. Secondly, I developed glycocalyx-inspired carbohydrate brushes and identi ed interfacial attributes that promote viral binding, allowing me to learn from nature and formulate design rules for virus-resistant coatings.
