About Rasmus Mortensen

Head of Tuberculosis Vaccine Research at Statens Serum Institut. I have a PhD in immunology from the University of Copenhagen and have always had an interest in infectious disease immunology and vaccinology. In our group, we are working on understanding the interplay between mycobacteria and the host with the overall goal of designing novel vaccination strategies against tuberculosis. Currently we have one vaccine in clinical trials and several novel vaccine candidates under pre-clinical development. I studied a family of proteins from Mycobacterium tuberculosis for their potential use in future vaccine formulations. More specifically, the project addressed the effects of prophylactic vaccination with antigens from a novel virulence-related secretion system. I characterized the cytokine expression pattern of vaccine induced CD4 T cells and demonstrated significant protective efficacy of some of these antigens in an animal disease model.
