In 1968, I joined G Cook and Sons as a trainee Quantity Surveyor..I was appointed a director of G Cook and Sons back in 1984. on the retirement of John Cook who was a grandson of George Cook, the founder of the company.John Cook had mentored me prior to his retirement and taught me much about the finer points of plastering including traditional plain and decorative plasterwork, This enabled me to take over from him as the company estimator.In 1985 we were asked to apply lime plaster… Show more In 1968, I joined G Cook and Sons as a trainee Quantity Surveyor..I was appointed a director of G Cook and Sons back in 1984. on the retirement of John Cook who was a grandson of George Cook, the founder of the company.John Cook had mentored me prior to his retirement and taught me much about the finer points of plastering including traditional plain and decorative plasterwork, This enabled me to take over from him as the company estimator.In 1985 we were asked to apply lime plaster to the walls and ceilings of a house in Wandsworth in South London.This was to be the first of many lime plastering jobs we have been involved with nationally, including Uppark House, Ightham Mote and recently the New Bodleian Library in Oxford.I have managed many projects in London including the restoration of St Mary At Hill, Christchurch Spitalfields, St Georges Bloomsbury and Somerset House to name just a few.Internationally, I was responsilble for our most prestigious project of all, the lime plastering to the Rotunda of the Church of the Holy Sepulchre in Jerusalem and also the restoration of a house in Kobe.Japan.I have been managing director of G Cook and Sons for the last ten years or so and have led the company into new areas of specialist plastering which include the use of lime plasters and renders on new buildings including insulated render systems.I have now been involved with plastering for nearly fifty years and have thoroughly enjoyed my involvement with the restoration and conservation of some of Britain's iconic buildings.In 2011 I had the honour of becoming a Liveryman at the Plaisterers' Company in the City of London and I am now serving on the Industry Committee.I am at present a member of CEN/TC 125/WG5, which is a working group which deals with European plastering matters.
