The problem with existing tornado alert systems is that they do not provide a means to make the average citizen IMMEDIATELY aware of the physical proximity of a tornado to him or her, and tornadoes can be extremely difficult to detect through rain, hail and darkness. The first time a person may become aware of the physical presence of a tornado is when they hear the "approaching freight train" sound--and by then it's too late. This is a huge problem across Oklahoma, the plains states, and large parts of Texas, as well as many other parts of the country.The Tornadalert changes that. The Tornadalert is a truly Personal Tornado Alert System. The Tornadalert is housed in a small fob that can be carried on a user's keychain. It continuously monitors the user's surroundings, searching for the telltale signature of an approaching tornado. The device operates through rain, hail, and darkness and can provide the user with valuable seconds to seek and find shelter BEFORE THEY CAN HEAR IT!As Principal Engineer I was and remain responsible for all digital, analog, firmware, printed circuit design, and mechanical design of the product.

These systems are used by the US and foreign militaries, aircraft engine and airframe manufacturers, Caterpillar Corporation, and many others. Over the past several years I have designed data acquisition systems, and components thereof, for programs that include the Apache attack helicopter (Longbow Version), the D-5 missile carried by the Trident nuclear Submarine, the AMRAAM (Advanced Medium Range Air-to-Air Missile) Missile, and the W62 nuclear warhead. For most of the above units custom designed signal conditioning modules such as high- and low-level analog, discrete, synchronous and asynchronous serial, etc. are stacked upon a master encoding module to complete an assembly. These systems typically employ an embedded microcontroller and multiple FPGAs, as well as assorted FLASH ROM, EPROM, A/D converters, etc., as dictated by the particular program requirement. My telemetry module designs enumerated below included the FPGA and board-level electrical design. My module designs included but were not limited to the following:a) Custom-designed high-speed synchronous and asynchronous interface modules per customer specification requirements;b) SDLC Interface Module;c) 64-channel Bi-level Interface Modules;d) 64-channel Analog Interface Modules;e) Modifications and improvements to various other previously-designed modules.

Senior EngineerVega Precision Laboratories Jan 1980 - Jul 1989Vienna, VirginiaDesign and development of one of the components of the HAMOTS (High-Accuracy Multiple Object Tracking System) for use at Hill AFB, Utah and Miramar Naval Air Station, San Diego, CA.The HAMOTS system is used on Air Combat Maneuvering Instrumentation (ACMI) for use in training pilots and other troops. The system permits missions to be recorded, stored, and replayed in real-time in a classroom environment. The ground-based portion of the system interrogates and receives real time data from multiple players, both ground-based (troops and vehicles) as well as airborne, via a number of relay stations located throughout the training range. Data that is recorded includes everything that is required to re-create the player position in time and three-dimensional space. This data is stored at a central station and made available later in order to re-create the mission for the benefit of the students.My involvement consisted of the design and construction of a portion of the airborne system, which was installed in a P4 (Sidewinder) missile pod carried aboard an F-16 aircraft, for use in “air-to-air” and “air-to-ground” missions. My unit accepted time, space and position data from the aircraft system bus, as well as weapons information, and transmitted that data back to the central station. The bulk of the digital hardware was implemented in a full custom LSI Logic (brand) gate array of my design.
