At Golden Moon Circles, I offer strategic planning, management, and publishing consulting for businesses and organizations, work that sometimes extends into specific communications, HR, marketing, publicity, website, SEO, and social media projects, as well as writing and content-creation assistance, based on client needs. I focus my work on projects that improve organizational health, including clarifying strategic vision and aligning planning with it; improving structure and systems effectiveness; actualizing diversity, accessibility, and inclusion intentions; and putting people first—serving both employees, customers, and strategic partners with integrity, excellence, and respectful relationship.

I serve on the CFAC (Consumer and Family Advisory Committee) for Vaya Health, a Managed Care Organization overseeing more than $1 billion in Medicaid, federal, state, and local funding for mental health, substance use, intellectual and developmental disability (IDD), and traumatic brain injury (TBI) services in 31 counties in North Carolina.I also serve on Vaya's Health Equity Council, which works to reduce disparities in access to services and improve equity in health outcomes and diverse representation in service providers, and its Member Materials Review Committee, which helps ensure Vaya's member handbook, brochures, and other information are accessible and intelligible to the public.

Liberty Corner Enterprises, Inc. (LCE) is a nonprofit organization serving intellectually and developmentally disabled adults with supported employment, residential supportive living, and group homes. LCE has been operating for more than 30 years. I serve on LCE's Board of Directors and on its Finance Committee.

The Center for Craft is a national nonprofit 501c3 organization dedicated to advancing the field of craft by fostering new ideas, funding craft scholarships, and backing the next generation of makers, curators, and critics. Its new 5-year strategic plan (beginning in 2023) emphasizes supporting diverse craft communities and empowering and resourcing craft artists, researchers, curators, and institutions with grants. I serve on the Center for Crafts' Board of Directors and Governance Committee, and I also chair the Center's DEAI (Diversity, Equity, Accessibility, & Inclusion) Committee.

I have served on the Advisory Council for the Family Support Network of Western North Carolina (FSN) at Mission Hospital since 2008 and as the council's Chairperson since 2010. The organization serves children with special needs and their families throughout all of Western North Carolina, offering education and training, group support events, outreach and community activities, a resource library, and support for children receiving therapies and in-patient hospital services. Resources on many facets of caregiving are offered to parents, family members, community agencies, and professionals serving children with special needs.I have also served in the organization as a Support Group Facilitator, a Family Trainer, and a Parent-to-Parent Mentor, as well as participated in talks and panels offered by FSN for college students, medical groups, parents, and school systems.I received the organization's Exceptional Service Award in 2014.

Project INTERACT is an interprofessional autism training program for graduate students in Psychology, Special Education, and Speech Language Pathology. The program is funded by a five-year Department of Education grant. With its interdisciplinary foundation, Project INTERACT trains participants to meet the high-intensity needs of autistic children and other children with moderate to severe intellectual disabilities—to improve the quality of service delivery for autistic and intellectually disabled children. Near the end of each academic year of the 12-month Project INTERACT program, I have designed and moderated a panel of four to five autistic adults for a class session in the capstone course of the program.

I offer talks and training about autism, disability, and neurodiversity for educational and community institutions. I have written for publications in the United States and elsewhere and also occasionally blog about these topics. The Independent Book Publishers Association (IBPA) is the trade association for independent book publishers. Since 2002 I have been privileged to serve as a judge for the IBPA Benjamin Franklin Awards, the annual book awards program designed to recognize the finest titles produced by independent book publishers. I have served as a design judge and as an editorial judge for various subject categories.

Zipping for Autism is an annual fundraiser supporting autistic children, adults, and families in North Carolina. Founded in 2012, the event has raised more than $250,000. Tzedek Social Justice Fund engages in social justice philanthropy in Asheville and western North Carolina. I served as one of five paid Community Grantmaking Fellows in 2021-2022, and together we distributed a half-million dollars in support of work addressing racial justice, LGBTQIA+ justice, and anti-Semitism with a focus on community healing, wealth redistribution, and systems change.I also served on the review committee for Tzedek's Brilliance Awards, which recognize leaders who have been especially impactful in working for justice, in 2021 and 2022.

Altamont Environmental, Inc. was an environmental engineering firm based in Asheville, North Carolina. Altamont provided services including environmental assessment, land planning, site design, stream restoration, compliance, and remediation. I helped the company prepare for ownership transition, and at the end of December 2016 the company merged with Anchor QEA, a much larger firm with offices around the United States.I was Director of Resources and Senior Strategic Consultant at Altamont. In addition to serving on the management team, I oversaw human resources, including talent acquisition and hiring, performance assessments, on-boarding, and projects such as creating a new annual evaluation system and a rewrite of the employee handbook.I led the company's social media efforts and was the primary author of online content for the company blog and Facebook and LinkedIn pages. I worked with internal and external partners to redesign the company website and to create new contemporary, professional print marketing materials.I served as the supervisor for the company's lead editor, as well as an editor at times myself, and I partnered with the lead editor to ensure the quality of the company's reports and proposals.Overall, I worked to support employees and ownership in helping the business grow and be successful; to make the institution habitable and meaningful in quality of work and life for employees; to provide excellent service to clients; and, at the beginning and finally, to help the business prepare for sale and ultimately accomplish a merger with Anchor QEA.

I directed the Lark Jewelry & Beading division and imprint from its founding in January 2010 until February 2013. My group drove the profitability of the overall Lark business for those 3 years. Leading a group of 6 to 8 editors and designers, I restructured and widely expanded Lark’s publishing program of beading and jewelry content, creating numerous best-selling and well-reviewed books and an overall list with excellent margins. I guided acquisitions, content, design (including cover design), publicity, and marketing. My job duties included:• developing and executing a holistic business plan that fulfilled the short-term needs of the business while reflecting long-term strategic planning• managing and training staff, including assigning work, evaluating performance, and managing day-to-day workflow• tracking and reporting on financial performance and costs• reviewing parent company and distributor financial reporting information• acquiring new titles for an optimally balanced and profitable list• creating book proposals for presentation with P&Ls at the parent company, Sterling Publishing• managing relationships with key customers, distributors, buyers, and media• overseeing editorial and design production of all the group’s books• performing extensive marketing and publicity work on social media platforms such as Facebook(including creating and developing the Lark Jewelry & Beading Facebook page), Twitter, and theLark blog, as well as via a well-developed print and digital publicity list• collaborating with off-team partners in sales, production, publicity, and marketingIn sum, I created and executed a profitable business vision and plan keyed by publishing excellent-quality books appropriate for our audience and positioning them strategically in contemporary sales channels. I emphasized team building and relationship building, including utilizing social media actively and passionately to create community and to extend our brand and marketing reach.

As a senior editor for Lark Books, I performed book acquisition, development, and promotion of craft titles and art gallery books. I published a wide range of profitable books, including titles in beading, quilting, ceramics, glass, Judaica, woodworking, metalwork, and paper craft. I created the best-selling Beadweaving Master Class series, and I published numerous successful titles in Lark's 500 Series, Masters Series, and Penland Series. I helped expand the senior editor role at Lark to include promotion and marketing after a book shipped to the printer, partnering with sales channels, bloggers, and authors and utilizing digital and social media platforms extensively.

FIRST is an organization that serves persons with disabilities with programs and advocacy to support and foster healthy, inclusive, and self-determined lives. Founded in 2002, the organization offers training and supports for parents, educators, summer camp, community navigation, building natural supports, supported living, and more. I served as Board president from 2008 to 2011, and Board vice president from 2011 to 2012.

I am the former editor in chief of New Age Retailer magazine, rebranded as Retailing Insight with the January 2012 issue. Assistant Editor (2 years), Associate Editor (1 year), Senior Editor (2 years), Editor in Chief (3 years), and finally Editor at Large (1 year) for a business magazine serving the mind-body-spirit retail and wholesale community, including niche and general bookstores and gift stores.New Age Retailer (now called Retailing Insight magazine) was a B2B business magazine for 10,000 independent retailers published 7 times a year, usually at between 150 and 200 pages. For more than 8 years, I edited all the copy—and wrote quite a bit of it—in every issue of NAR plus other occasional Continuity Publishing publications. I interviewed scores of book authors, publishers, wholesalers, store owners, and musicians formally and thousands informally.As editor in chief (EIC), I managed and directed all the magazine’s content and design. Achievements as EIC include a full magazine redesign; creating an industry awards program; creating the NAR retailer email program; reintroducing and moderating NAR programming at trade shows; creating a retailer-survey program; coining a new tagline; writing a well-received series of major industry interviews; and creating several new magazine columns. I managed three people in the editorial department; the magazine and website work of numerous employees in other departments, including the designer and layout artist; countless contributors and columnists; and, for 5 years, more than 60 retailer book reviewers.Additionally, I served on and sometimes led the Board of Directors of the parent company in three stints: 1999 to 2000, 2002, and 2003 to 2012. I served as president and treasurer of the BOD and also chair of the Board of Trustees.
