I am a nationally certified sign language interpreter (RID-NIC Advanced). Currently providing interpreting services in a variety of settings throughout the Phoenix metro area, around the state of Arizona, and worldwide via remote video solutions. I specialize in post-secondary academic interpreting and medical interpreting. I also design and present nationally approved professional development workshops for sign language interpreters.

Responsible for developing and teaching courses in American Sign Language (ASL). Taught both beginning and advanced courses in American Sign Language. Other courses included Fingerspelling in ASL and Introduction to Deaf Culture. These courses are a first step for students who are interested in pursuing a career in sign language interpreting. Basic fluency in ASL and an awareness of Deaf culture are also valuable to students entering the fields of nursing, fire-fighting, law enforcement and other service professions. Departmental duties included scheduling course offerings, recruiting qualified faculty, supervising and evaluating adjunct faculty, and monitoring high school dual enrollment programs for sign language.

Performed simultaneous interpreting and transliterating of considerable difficulty for Deaf and Hard of Hearing individuals in fast-paced, highly technical environments within a post-secondary setting. As a lead interpreter, also assisted the Supervisor of Interpreting Services with student advisement and interpreter scheduling. Evaluated and mentored temporary-hourly interpreters. Developed and provided professional development workshops for college interpreters. Developed and provided training for students and faculty to promote successful classroom communication.

Extended Campuses

I interacted with students on a variety of topics as guest lecturer and professor. Topics included education, diversity in the areas of sexual identity and disability, deafness and Deaf culture. Of particular interest was the impact of difference or otherness on communication and identity development.

Developed and implemented instruction in accordance with state academic standards in all curriculum areas for deaf and hard-of-hearing students. Wrote annual IEPs for each student and evaluated their progress, modifying instruction as needed to ensure students accomplished established goals. Particular focus on using students’ native American Sign Language to teach English across the curriculum.

Beachwood, Oh

As a long-term substitute teacher, worked collaboratively with a second teacher in a Total Communication classroom. Developed and implemented instruction in all academic areas for 14 deaf and hard-of-hearing students. Assisted in scheduling all additional student services including interpreting, audiology, speech therapy, and counseling.

Focal point for all department educational issues including course and test construction.
