On behalf of the two charities involved - CPRE Lancashire and The Ramblers - I lead a £250,000 Heritage Fund-supported project to establish the GM Ringway walking trail as a permanent resource for Greater Manchester.This ambitious project will connect the 2.8 million residents of the ten Greater Manchester boroughs with the natural and cultural heritage on their doorstep. Green in every way, all 20 stages of the varied and beautiful 200-mile route offer a unique degree of integration with the local public transport network.Project elements include:• engaging a wider range of people in walking, nature and heritage• on-the-ground waymarking of the trail• creating user-friendly mapping and directions• identifying and implementing appropriate digital resources (website and app)• establishing a 'trail passport' scheme to promote use of the trail and boost revenues for heritage attractions and hospitality businesses• establishing a large-scale volunteer and partner network• putting in place structures to maintain project benefits over the long term• monitoring and reporting project benefits• developing and maintaining relationships with key stakeholders.
