Life's an adventure. Work is about 4th or 5th down on my list.Programming is fun, challenging and rewarding, but the people I'm with and the goals we're running towards make all the difference. Things that make it NOT fun? Mandatory incident calls at midnight-30 or over the weekend. Quarterly performance reviews, all-hands meetings that go nowhere. Not given the resources to fix broken code, infrastructure, or generally full trust to improve the product. Broken promises from leadership. Oooof that's a big one.Things that make a difference? Immediate PTO on hire, being able to take time off to take care of family, or be sick for a couple days without posting PTO requests. Not being bugged while on vacation or the weekend. Going to a conferences multiple times a year with your colleagues, clients and meeting them face-to-face. Given the full trust and authority from leadership to manage the product.These are not perks or guidelines.
