As part of the Test Project Engineering group, I am involved with Ground Support Systems Verification and Validation testing in preparation for Launch Vehicle processing. Tasks include integration of Launch Commit Criteria, development of test procedure documentation, and Launch Control System user validation testing. As a member of the Simulation Training Team, we are developing processes and procedures for performing real-time simulations of the Launch Vehicle and Ground Support Systems in order to provide training for the Firing Room Prime Launch Team.

During my first year back at the Kennedy Space Center, I supported Validation Testing of the new Launch Control System for NASA's Space Launch System. This position included configuring and provisioning the many Linux, AIX, and Windows servers for the Command and Control System as well as providing operations support to other test disciplines in the Firing Room.After the first year I transferred over to the Test Project Engineering group where I am involved with the Launch Vehicle processing documentation, user validation and performance testing, integration of Launch Commit Criteria, and working with the Simulation Training Team to provide real-time simulations for the Firing Room Prime Launch Team. In this position I am required to learn the test processes and overall functionality of the many sub-systems associated with the Ground System and Launch Vehicle.
Project Engineer
Project Engineer leading the development of communications and surveillance systems for Space Florida's Launch Complex 46 refurbishment project on Cape Canaveral AFS. I am also involved with contract proposal teams for manned and unmanned development of the Liberty Launch System and NASA Small Business Innovation Research projects. With these projects I have developed high level system requirements, Microsoft Visio diagrams, and Microsoft PowerPoint presentations in support of System Requirements Reviews and System Design Reviews.I have continued to support this project by occasionally working as a consultant to provide expertise with site integration and IT configurations as SLC-46 successfully supported it's first launch of a Minotaur 4 and now is being reconfigured for NASA's Ascent Abort (AA-2) mission.• Developed an IP based HD Video Surveillance System and Facility Monitoring System that integrates into an IT infrastructure. Performed requirements definition, project planning, vendor research, cost analysis, and integration design.• Contributed to the design of a ground command, control, & telemetry system to include voice and data communications, IT infrastructure, and customer interfaces.• Contributed to contract proposals by providing expertise in launch vehicle integration processes, avionic system testing procedures, and development of data acquisition and telemetry systems.• Assisted with the design requirements for a critical avionic component as part of the overall launch vehicle avionic system.• Performed research for testing a GPS Metric Track avionic system using a GPS Constellation Simulator.
Instrumentation System Engineering Lead
After 10 years in increasing roles, I was appointed to the Instrumentation System Engineering Lead position where I successfully led a team of 12 system engineers in the processing of Space Shuttles and the Ares I-X rocket for flight. This position required partnering annual goals and objectives, providing task assignments, and scheduling shifts and overtime. The lead position included training and mentoring of new hires where I also developed three levels of system engineering certification training requirements. As a technical specialist, I provided support to the Engineering Review Board (ERB) for system anomalies by performing procedural reviews, technical analysis, and risk assessments.My most notable projects were the External Tank Digital Camera and Flash Unit, where I collaborated with the design team and played a key role in test and analysis of the newly installed IEEE-1394 Firewire cables as well as the overall functional testing of the camera and flash. Another project required technical expertise in the testing of MIL-STD-1553B telemetry data busses for the the Orbiter Interface Unit (OIU), which interfaced various payloads (including the ISS) with the Orbiter’s Telemetry data stream. I was also instrumental in writing installation, verification, and operational test procedures for various avionic systems to include the Solid-State Flight Recorders, Developmental Flight Instrumentation, and payload interface testing.As a Level I Launch Certified engineer, I supported launch countdown and landing operations. It was an honor to be a part of the Space Shuttle Program and to see it through successful completion.
Instrumentation System Engineer
With the opportunity to work in the Space Shuttle Avionics Instrumentation System Engineering group, I immediately hit the ground running to learn the engineering side of test operations. Within the first year I had obtained the Instrumentation System Level 3 Certification, which allowed me to perform system level testing and command console support. I was also involved with troubleshooting instrumentation sensor systems to include accelerometers, strain gages, acoustics, thermocouples, and resistive thermal devices. As part of the retest for these and other systems I developed detailed test procedures for signal path verification and validating test requirements.As the Application Software Team Lead, I played a key role in our software team receiving the NASA Launch Director’s award for a mandated enhancement to the Caution and Warning console software package. This project had a short lead time and required critical thinking, collaboration, reviewing software code, writing verification procedures, and performing regression testing. This position also required me to be responsible for the validation testing and anomaly resolution for a full complement of console support software.After four years performing various duties to include system hardware and console software testing, I was proud to become the Space Shuttle Atlantis Lead Instrumentation System Engineer. This position required me to lead all aspects of the Instrumentation System’s engineering planning and processes to get Shuttle Atlantis ready for flight from the end of the previous mission through launch. These processes included planning for modifications and system testing, writing test procedures, scheduling, problem analysis, performing system and integrated vehicle testing, and completing configuration verification packages. Through hard work and delegation of tasks to newer engineers, I did my best to make sure the instrumentation systems were ready to fly without any delays to the schedule.
Technical Specialist
As things slowed down and contracts were changing over on the ETR, I moved my career to the Kennedy Space Center to support the Record and Playback Sub-System (RPS) ground Telemetry station. Taking my knowledge and expertise in the area of telemetry data systems and data analysis, I quickly learned the new Telemetry Systems, which prompted management to promote me to the Test Coordinator position. This position allowed me to impart leadership to technicians for telemetry station configurations and to utilize my technical expertise in support of Space Shuttle test operations and launch countdowns. As a Technical Specialist, I worked closely with the Space Shuttle System Engineering groups to develop telemetry test setups for avionic system testing and analyzing telemetry data during system troubleshooting. The insight I acquired in relation to testing of avionic and instrumentation systems along with the ability to perform under pressure, prepared me for the next level in my career.

As an Electronic Technician, I gained a broad knowledge base in RF, analog, and digital electronics. Working with S-Band Telemetry tracking antenna systems, I was involved with operations and testing of Servo Systems, Low Noise Amplifiers, Down Converters, and Receivers. I was also involved with performing Operations and Maintenance on Bit Synchronizers, Decoms, Video Combiners, Frequency Division Multiplexers/Demultiplexers, Analog & Digital Recorders, and Data Display Equipment. I played a key role in the installation of a new GPS Timing system and became very knowledgeable with IRIG Telemetry and Timing Standards. While working closely with system engineering, I assisted with tracking antenna system modifications and firmware testing. With the advancement of digital data transmission over SATCOM, I installed and operated a Time Division Multiplexer System (TDMS) that allowed for retransmission of critical telemetry data back to the mainland so that system engineers could evaluate the mission data near real-time. For a short period of time, I took on the added responsibilities of the Quality Assurance representative for my department where I performed oversight on system modifications and stamped off on O&M procedures and tracking sheets.During a period of three years I transferred to Patrick AFB to work at the Precision Measurement Equipment Laboratory (PMEL), where I performed Maintenance, Repair, and Calibration of precision test equipment in support of Eastern Test Range tracking sites. This position allowed me to obtain insight into working with and understanding the tolerances of test equipment to include RF Test Generators, Spectrum & Network Analyzers, Time Domain Reflectometers, and many High Frequency RF components such as Couplers, Splitters, Attenuators, Precision Loads, and waveguides. I believe this experience was invaluable for the future of my career in System Test Engineering.
