English Teacher

Fukuoka City, Japan

At Amity I have enjoyed implementing new teaching techniques such as computer software based learning, as well as building on my knowledge of TPR and Child Centered Learning, successfully combining my new trainings with my former knowledge to create even better lessons for my students.I have been successful in helping the company to meet monetary goals through communicating recommended materials and extra classes to customers.I have been able to deepen my understanding and practice of Japanese business etiquette and customer service in an all Japanese staff environment.Following a lesson demonstration at the company's follow-up training I was highlighted by trainers as an exemplary teacher, and following on from this I was made 'Native Teacher Area Assistant' - taking on the added role of mentor and representative for the company's native teachers in the Kyushu area.

English Teacher

Playday English

Nagasaki City, Japan

At Playday I was able to build further on my teaching skills, encouraged by my boss and mentor who shared theory books on teaching. I discovered and began to implement teaching concepts such as Child Centered Learning, TPR, and Emotional Positioning, which changed the way I was teaching, and allowed to me understand how to tailor my approach for different age groups. I became experienced teaching not only school age children, but toddlers and adults.Small class sizes and an array of resources and textbooks gave me so much room to exercise my creativity, and I worked under pressure to learn the frameworks of various textbooks and teaching styles in time for classes and kept a dynamic schedule, working various shift patterns at school base as well as commuting two mornings per week to teach original lesson plans at a private elementary school. Along with my fellow staff I took part in the organization and execution of events and worked to keep up the quality and freshness of the school and lesson contents, regularly taking time to create new props and school decorations by hand.

Aug 2015 - Aug 2016

Assistant Language Teacher

Nagasaki, Japan

The JET Programme allowed me to dip my toe in to the world of teaching for the first time, while living and working in a culture so vastly different from my own, as the only English speaker in a Japanese staffroom, exposing me to a variety of pressures and challenges, but ultimately becoming the working experience which would not only make me more flexible, tolerant, patient and better equip to handle the unknown, but helped to solidify my present day values which center around international relations.Working at around 10 different schools over five years gave me the opportunity to team teach with many different teachers, sometimes having them as a guide and at other times using the internet and my wits to come uo with lesson ideas on the spot, training me to work under pressure and feel comfortable with making mistakes as I deepened my understanding of what it means to be a good teacher. Over the years, I became preoccupied with the absence of phonics education in Japanese public education, and vowed to learn more about it. I began to work with Japanese teachers to incorporate phonics in to lessons at my own schools, and in 2015, I was called upon by the Board of Education to move to a new elementary school where I taught Japanese teachers how about phonics, and later demonstrated a phonics lesson for around 100 teachers in Nagasaki city.In 2014, I became ALT Advisor, helping new ALTs with their translation to life in Japan, visiting their schools to watch lessons and give advice and support.I have been an enthusiastic member of my school communities outside of the classroom, eating lunch and playing sports with students, cheering them on at sporting events, training students for speech contests and Culture Festival performances.
