About Rebecca Diamond

The most meaningful case I have worked on involved an individual who was wrongfully convicted of assaulting a couple of police officers. He tried to file a civil suit against the officers who had assaulted him, but since he was in prison, he was unable to pay the lawyers that filed his suit and they withdrew from his case. He missed a filing deadline, and his case was dismissed for want of prosecution. He tried to appeal the dismissal, asking the judge to appoint him an attorney, but the judge denied his request. He tried again, hand writing a note to the judge stating that he didn’t understand what the court was telling him to do and that he wanted an attorney, but the judge again denied it.His experience with the legal system must have been so confusing. There was no way for him to know what he was expected to do at any step of the process. Every time he asked for help, his request was denied. It was as if justice were completely inaccessible to him. Unfortunately, I’ve learned that his story is all too common. People represent themselves in court all the time, without having any idea how to navigate through all the procedural complexities. Someone might have an airtight argument that could win in court, but if they miss a deadline they didn’t know about or don’t file an “appearance” (which many people do not know they have to do), they could lose by default. I want to work at an organization where I can use my computer science background and past work experiences to automate processes that increase access to justice. Self-represented litigants face procedural hurdles that don’t need to be there. It appears that nobody in charge of designing the judicial system is putting themselves in the shoes of a self-represented litigant and trying to navigate it. I want to use the technical and legal skills I’ve developed to help design a legal system that actually allows everyone to have access to justice.
