About Rebecca Rice

Rebecca Rice is an award winning choreographer, respected teacher and the Artistic Director/Choreographer of Rebecca Rice Dance, a noted modern dance company in Boston. Her professional company has been presented professionally by the Boston Ballet, Jacob's Pillow Dance Festival, Bank of America Celebrity Series, The Boston Pops, World Music and the US State Department in Kazakhstan. It made its New York City debut in 2006 to high acclaim. As resident choreographer and teacher at the Boston Ballet for almost two decades, she created works on the company and school and taught modern dance, choreography, ballet and creative process. She created numerous works on BBII as well as organized Boston Ballet's first choreography workshops, "Studio 7 @ Boston Ballet." As an artist/educator she developed modern and choreography programs at MIT, Winsor and the Dana Hall and was artist-in-residence at Green Street Studios in 2007. As an award-winning dancer, she worked professionally with various artists and companies throughout the US including Pittsburgh Dance Alloy, Gerri Houlihan, Stephen Pelton, Bill Evans and Marianne Goldberg. Coming from a small town in MA, she grew up studying and performing the work of Ted Shawn and Ruth St. Denis with her grandmother, Marion Rice. Rebecca graduated with honors in modern dance from the University of Utah where she worked with Bill Evans, Ron Ruby, Ririe-Woodbury and Utah Repertory Dance Theatre. In New York City she worked with Viola Farber as well as studied at the Limon and Ailey Schools.She was a graduate teaching fellow at the University of Pittsburgh where she was a founding member of the Pittsburgh Dance Alloy Company. Rebecca recently returned from a 3 week trip to Kazakhstan where she was invited by the US State Department to be a "Cultural Envoy". She choreographed a new work, "Uplift" on the Samruk Dance Company as well as presented master classes and lectures on American contemporary modern dance.Specialties: modern dance, ballet, choreography, improvisation, consulting, privates, concert production, historical dance, innovative collaborations with artists, musicians/composers and other choreographers.

Developed a dance program for students grades 5-12 at the Winsor School, Boston MA. Taught modern dance technique, theory, choreography, creative thinking, creative movement, dance appreciation as well as ballet technique. Choreographed and produced concerts as well as brought in guest artists, including Chris Elam's Misnomer Dance Theatre and Rebecca Rice Dance. Staged "Chopin Prelude" (1924), choreography by Ted Shawn, on faculty as well as "Grieg Waltz" (1931) on advanced student dancers. Choreographed musicals and theater productions, including Shakespeare's "Comedy of Errors", "Much Ado about Nothing" as well as musicals "Boy's from Syracuse" and "The Gondoliers" with the Roxbury Latin School.

Under the Artistic Directorship of Bruce Marks, I developed the Modern Dance and Choreography program at the Boston Ballet for the professional track students and members of the Boston Ballet Company. Created and produced "Studio 7 at Boston Ballet" Choreography workshop for company members and guest artists from 1997-2000. As well as teaching modern, ballet and choreography for the professional school, I created yearly performance choreography on advanced professional-track students and Boston Ballet II, as well as on a number of company members, including Jennifer Gelfand. The modern and choreography program continued under Anna-Marie Holmes and was slowly dissolved under Mikko Nissinen in 2004. Much of the choreography I created on the professional dancers at the Boston Ballet remain in my company's repertoire and is performed today.
