I am an Assistant Professor of Organizational Communication at University of Nevada, Las Vegas, where my research focuses on communication in emergency management and security organizations. I am interested in how organizations communicatively define goals and coordinate members toward the objectives of managing risk and crisis, and how risk and crisis response requires interorganizational collaboration. I teach in the areas of organizational communication, job interviewing, communication theory, and interorganizational collaboration and community engagement. My current research focuses on risk, security, and interorganizational collaboration. Recent research has looked at virtual collaboration around the COVID-19 response. I am interested in how technology has been used to create new communication routines that keep emergency responses coordinated in our time of social distancing. This project broadly considers how emergency management organizations work with non-profits and other government agencies to achieve security, preparedness, and resilience goals. I am especially interested in how collaboration is communicatively framed and utilized, and the interorganizational relationship between federal, state, and local organizations.
