Characterization of the ER stress gene, CHAC1, including transcriptional regulation, function, and role in body composition regulation with specific attention paid to muscle and growth hormone biology.Technical skills learned include molecular biology techniques such as mammalian cell culture, plasmid cloning, nucleic acid extraction, qPCR, Luciferase assay, glutathione quantification, and immunoblotting. In addition, animal techniques such as handling, intraperitoneal injections, necropsy, and mouse embryonic fibroblast isolation.

Space Life Sciences Lab, Kennedy Space Center, Florida

Animal Care Facility - animal husbandry for up to 2,500 mice and rats in a clean roomenvironment. Work included performing animal handling using aseptic technique,support for all clean/dirty cage cleaning, and maintaining SPF barrier conditions.Research Support – provided customer support for experiments on shuttle flights STS-121 and STS-115. Duties included outfitting labs with required equipment and suppliesfor pre-launch preparation of biological experiments.PetroAlgae – provided technical experimental support to commercial customer. Tasksrequired include preparation of experimental protocols cell counting, spectrophotometry,various vital measurements (pH, wet weight, dry weight), culture maintenance, dataentry and analysis for both algal and water-plant samples. Written and verbal reports onexperimental summaries given to supervisor.
