About Rebekah Ash

Bek is an early career researcher with a passion for international development, sustainability and education in the agriculture industry. She is currently completing her PhD focusing on context-specific solutions climate change mitigation and adaptation in sustainable livestock systems. Alongside the PhD, Bek continues to work in enabling early adoption of greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions mitigation and carbon sequestration initiatives under the Emissions Reduction Fund with Australia’s leading soil carbon project developer, AgriProve. During Bek’s PhD, she aims to better understand how regenerative agriculture impacts emissions and how this intersects with productivity, profitability and biodiversity in Australia. Bek is using modelling programs such as GrassGro, RothC, FullCAM, SB-GAF and simple financial models as an interdisciplinary approach to investigating her research. Further to this work, she is currently based in Northern Kenya understanding how gender interacts with ‘resilience form below’ in pastoralist communities. This research is being undertaken with a local non-profit research organisation, Centre for Research and Development in Drylands (CRDD), as part of an ACIAR funded project. In future work, Bek aspires to further understand how policy is created and what has traditionally constituted effective policy in agriculture and climate on a global scale. Throughout her time at AgriProve, she has empowered over 200 landholders who manage over 200,000 hectares by assisting in a transition to sustainable land management and managing carbon projects. Bek has conducted educational field days and developed other communications media to allow primary producers to gain deserved societal recognition for their environmental stewardship. Her work at AgriProve is multifaceted constantly innovating in the environmental markets space beyond soil carbon and collaborating with research, government and private organisations.Rebekah has been a key youth leader in agriculture over the past 6 years presenting at major events as a plenary speaker including EvokeAg and Global Food Table where she sat on a panel with US Secretary of State John F. Kerry. She is an AgriFutures Horizon Scholar, Crawford Fund Scholar, Westpac Future Leaders Scholar and recipient of prestigious scholarships and awards at The University of Queensland including the 2021 UQ Agriculture Valedictorian.

My PhD project will focus on socially and economically responsible trajectories towards farms with net-zero emissions. My aim is to improve contemporary scientific understanding and catalyse the adoption of agricultural land management practices that provide resilience to the climate emergency. Most of all, I am passionate about working with landholders - the people who manage over 50% of Earth's land - to achieve these goals by informing public policy.
