About Olivier Thomas
After my first job at Philips Semiconductors, I got into embedded security.My mission was writting softwares to improve tests. It seemed appropriate to perform those myself to optimize each step (from sample preparation to reporting). Thus, after the development of a photolithography system, I immersed myself into laser fault injection. From the results, I felt the need of a hardware reverse engineering software.This impression is accentuated when I went to invasive techniques (FIB edit - micropobing). The first achievement was an "image viewer" for correlating and fast display of optical and electronic scan. I wrote at the same time a report describing the basis of a reverse engineering tool.Before going further, I still had to test other FA techniques.I then had the chance to technically manage the lab and continue this work with the help of experts. The first project was the improvement of delayering techniques to make pictures compatible with reverse engineering. Meanwhile, a first software has been developed which, although often limited, has significantly reduced the studies delivery time.The current step is the development of ARES (Automated Reverse Engineering Software) which gives new opportunities for all kind of studies..My goals are to:- Provide tools for better training of students and designers- Help certification laboratories to increase the overall security level- Identify weaknesses and propose improvements- Fight against piracy and counterfeiting- Advise companies in their strategic choices.
