Pdeng Trainee
To improve the additive manufacturing (i.e. 3D printing) of ceramic components, the AMSYSTEMS center is developing stereolithography systems which use feedback control to suppress errors in the manufacturing process. Within a larger team, my project aimed at realizing the sensing systems necessary to implement the desired feedback control. To achieve this, I performed literature study and compared available equipment. Then we implemented the purchased sensing system onto the stereolithography machine. After this, we performed open-loop experiments which showed that the sensing system can detect errors in the manufacturing process that lead to damage in the final product. The implemented equipment provides the necessary sensing for feedback control into the stereolithography machine.
Pdeng Trainee
My project, which was part of my PDEng traineeship, focused on a feasibility study for a flow sensor for biomedical applications. To achieve this, I developed theoretical models and performed FEM simulations to study the effect of various design parameters. Based on this, the feasibility of the technology became more clear, which was to the satisfaction of the company.

A theoretical study predicted that perfect filtering of electron spin can be achieved at the interface between Ni(111) and graphene. My project focused on spin dependent transport in nanoscale Ni/graphene/Al junctions. My main activities included: cleanroom fabrication, transport measurements and analysis and interpretation of data. The fabrication of devices has been succesfull. Initial transport measurements have shown results which are promising for future experiments.

Within the current research on polymer nanotechnology, there is a demand for a method which is able to automatically analyze scanning electron microscopy (SEM) images of polymer micro/nano structures. First I have set up a requirements document for making SEM images. Then I wrote a Matlab algorithm for image analysis and parameter extraction of these images. Finally I have produced a new series of nanostructures that where a factor of ten smaller than previous series. This allowed me to verify the functioning of the analyzing method. This method accelerated the ongoing research by automating the manual analysis on SEM images. I am proud to say that, with this project, I came in second in the annual thesis award of my University ('Saxion afstudeerprijs 2014').
Intern
It was my job to develop a model for injection and separation of blood cations during electrophoresis in a lab-on-chip application. I composed this model using statistical methods to process previous measurements as well as specific tests I conducted myself. The new model gave insight in the behavior of the system under different circumstances.
